So, where was I again? Ah yes, the tale of my high school confessions. Well you know… boring this, boring that… I’m in 10th grade suffering right now.

Nah, I’m teasing, I have a better story to tell.

 It all began on the day of our county swimming championship. I know right, I bet you thought I was going to give an exhausting monologue about how it was the best day ever and how I would remember this moment forever — and you are not necessarily wrong. Our school won the entire enchilada, which hasn’t happened within the last three years…

 so that means these next few years are going to be either sink or swim.

Anyway, back to the tale of a daring dreamer: a close friend of mine left his team sweater at home. His “sensible” solution? Hide in the locker room while we take the team pictures. 

At 7:45 AM, he texted asking to let him know when the photos were done. I laughed out loud and startled some people, then showed my friends his text.

Ten minutes later, he called me in an utter, profanity-laced panic.

 Despite his attempt to crazily raze the English language, my friend was entirely convinced his hiding spot was a secret masterpiece. Trying to hold back my laughter, I humored him and told him to lay low until warmups started.

 He finally emerged…

Looking ready to smack someone, he actually threw his arms over my shoulder (a brotherly Romeo & Juliet type moment). He praised me for being an emergency buoy and for shielding him from the coach’s wrath. After snatching the championship, he bought me food for the next two days. 

In the end, it wasn’t just the championship trophies that made the day unforgettable.

 It was the realization that true friendship is built in those chaotic, imperfect moments. 

It’s not about the performance of the “perfect” friendship; it’s about the absolute trust that someone has your back, ready to offer a perspicacious lifeline when you need it.
